Read.. so you never feel alone

This is what you will read if you open UNESCO’s website.

On 23rd April, readers and authors all over the world celebrated World Book Day. This day marks the celebration of one of the most beautiful feelings and activities in the world- Reading. The history of this day dates back to 1995 when UNESCO decided to celebrate 23rd April as World Book and Copyright Day in a Press Conference in Paris. This day is a tribute to significant literary figures like William Shakespeare. This day also marks the birth and death anniversary of Shakespeare, along with the death anniversary of along with Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.  Each year this concept is being increasingly loved and supported by people globally.

The theme city this year was Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur because of the strong focus on inclusive education, the development of a knowledge-based society, and accessible reading for all parts of the city’s population.

With the slogan “KL Baca – caring through reading”, the program focuses on four themes. They were:-

  1. Reading in all its forms
  2. Development of the book industry infrastructure
  3. Inclusiveness and digital accessibility
  4. Empowerment of children through reading

Among other events and activities there will be the construction of a book city (the Kota Buku Complex), a reading campaign for train commuters, enhancing of digital services and accessibility by the National Library of Malaysia for the disabled, and new digital services for libraries in 12 libraries in poor housing areas of Kuala Lumpur.

UNESCO is also providing access to some free books. Visit their website and satiate the reader in you.

Also, UNESCO and Idries Shah Foundation have launched the “World Tales” Short Story Competition. The details of which can be accessed through the link below.

My mum gave me an activity yesterday. (Not the household chore silly). She said, ‘’ you love books and possess so many. I have a task for you. Count them and tell me the figure in your stockpile. ‘’ (Which is why this post is coming today as I was busy the whole time counting the books and soaking in their fragrance. Hahahaha).  I first giggled at the idea but then I thought to myself, ‘let’s do this’.  When I did, I couldn’t take out all the books since they were neatly stacked and I didn’t want to disturb their sequence. (Read- taking them all out would have been a mess and I didn’t have the time to rearrange them back).

Well, when I did the calculation in my head, I roughly estimated that there would be around 120 books. The figure is higher than this, to be honest. But the immediate question which my heart popped was.’’ aren’t they less?’’ My mind replied,’’ considering the space, not at all. The shelf is already stuffed.’’ My soul said,’’ I want more!’’  ‘Excess of anything is harmful’ doesn’t apply to books I suppose. For me, it’s ‘the more, the merrier’.

In this pandemic, hard copies should not be preferred. E-books and audiobooks can be considered as an option now.  Something is better than nothing. In these tough times, Amazon comes to our rescue. It is providing some free issues and is offering some great deals for the e-books which are pocket friendly and along with giving a wide variety of books.

So what if the World Book Day is over, the lockdown isn’t. Here I enlist the 5 must-read books in the quarantine from my collection. (Honestly selecting only 5 was pretty tough).  I am hoping they will help you sail through this gloomy phase.

  1. Bridget Jones’ Diary

This book by Helen Fielding is one that I can read anytime anywhere. The protagonist shares her story via her journal and is a light story packed with many elements- drama, romance, comedy focusing on all aspects of her life- career, family, friends, relationship, her personality, her feelings, her emotions.

P.S- This was probably the only one which when adapted into the movie, won my heart in the screenplay form too. Kudos to the author who did wonders.

2. Life is What you make it

I am a Preeti Shenoy lover. And I don’t hesitate in admitting that. Whenever I read her books, I am mesmerized by her writing and story-telling skills. In this particular piece, she has perfectly explained the journey and struggle the protagonist faces while she is in depression and eventually becomes a bipolar personality. I won’t give any spoilers and reveal the ending. You will have to read it to know the end. All I can say is that this is one of the motivating books I have read and helped me sail through many low phases in my life.

  • 3. Tuesdays with Morrie

This is a story about Albom’s regular visits to his professor who doesn’t have much time in hand. A beautiful tale of the student-teacher relationship, this will touch your hearts. It even topped the New York Times Non-Fiction Bestsellers of 2000. Also, I find this one special because my cousin introduced me to this author.

  • 4. Adultery

To read about the grey areas of relationships, I suggest this one. Apart from being written by a famous author, Paulo Coelho, this adultery story is interesting and gripping.

  • 5. Corporate Atyachaar- The Comical Journey of an office doormat

Well, the name in itself is self-descriptive and interesting too. I am sure you would like this. The story of a fresher stepping into the corporate finance world as a financial advisor, settling in a new city, you will relate to it. A dominating and controlling boss, managing a weird client portfolio and the frustrations, this book by ABHAY NAGARAJAN has it all.

Apart from the above ones, you can also read The Secret wishlist (for the friendship rides, love roller coaster, boring marriage, temptations of extramarital aggair), Love, Cricket and SRK (the name says it all), Almost Single (It has humor, love, customs, family, a drama about mother-daughter disagreements on marriage as the clock is ticking), Almost There (Almost Single’s sequel), P.S I Love You and The Fault in Our Stars (for the hopeless romantic in you).

Reading has off lately, taken a backseat for quite some time as people now have access to other entertainment sources. However, I would suggest revisiting your reading habit as this lockdown can be a perfect time to do so. Apart from providing knowledge, they will instill positivity which is required to beat the self-isolation stress.

John Green aptly describes the quality of books, ‘Books are the ultimate Dumpees: put them down and they’ll wait for you forever; pay attention to them and they always love you back.’ For those who already have a collection, it’s time to wipe the dust and start reading! For those who don’t, please initiate the process. It will be a magical journey, trust me. As Ernest Hemingway rightly explains books,’ there is no friend as loyal as a book’.

5 best Bollywood comedy movies to watch during self-quarantine

Comedy as a genre is loved and appreciated by viewers of all age groups. On one hand, there are chances of the movie failing, as it might not be able to make the audience laugh as the directors anticipated. On the other hand, if it’s a success at the box office, the movie goes on to become a cult one. To brighten up your dull days during self-quarantine, we suggest five comedy movies to beat the lockdown stress and laugh your heart out.

  1. Andaaz Apna Apna

It is one of the cult films of all times. With a super star cast(Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Karishma, Raveena Tandon), it will leave you in bouts of laughter.  A story about two middle class survivors trying to woo  a rich heiress, Raveena, and wanting to make her marry both of them. In their journey, they cross paths with an underworld don, Teja who tries to create problems in their lives. With the twists and turns, the movie will definitely keep you glued to your screens.

2.Hera Pheri

This movie is packed with all elements to ensure you are hooked- humour, love story, double roles, kidnapping, thrill. The movie revolves around the trio- Babu Rao, Shyam and Raju on their quest to become rich but soon end up in trouble, dealing with an underworld don while trying to save a millionaire’s granddaughter. The credit for all the chaos goes to Babu Rao’s red phone. Hera Pheri and its sequels are a must watch if you are a comedy fan. With a power packed star cast and gripping story, you will find yourself laughing each time you watch them.

3. Dhamaal

Dhamaal  has been my all-time favourite. It can be watched on loop and  never fails to make you laugh, no matter how many times you watch it. It’s a story about four friends who had the desire to become a millionaire. After all the trouble in paradise, fighting together and against each other, they finally succeed in having money in their pockets. However, in the climax, they do not keep the movie. If you wish to know the answer to the question, then, please watch this movie . Its sequels are equally good and definitely worth watching.

4. Jab We Met

Last but not the least, I couldn’t resist including this in my list as this is my all-time favourite flick. With the dose of love and laughter, this rom-com is a must watch and will be delight for your eyes and ears (courtesy- the songs, the star cast and Kareena’s monologue).

5. Garam Masala

With two handsome Bollywood actors in the industry- Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, this film is a laughter riot. They both play different characters in the movie, Akshay has a playboy image and he triple dates simultaneously despite of being engaged and ends up in trouble. John fulfilling the role as his wing man, comes as his savior. For three hours, this movie will ensure the laugh from your face doesn’t fade away.

So, prepare the popcorns, create your watch list and binge watch on the above listed movies to cheer up your mood amidst the gloominess of quarantine. Coz everyday seems like a weekend and what better could be than a comedy movie after working the entire day be it household chores or work submission and meetings being done from home).

Wondering what to do during the 21 days lockdown?

  1. Follow the golden rule

Please stay indoors. Consider it as a social detox. Limit yourselves to your room, maximum the home. Venturing out would be stupid as it would be a huge risk to you and the people around you. The government, medical staff, personnel, and many people are risking their lives for us and working round the clock. So please stay home, stay safe!  And by staying at home, it doesn’t give you the liberty to call people over and party. Even though this is not a time to panic, this is also not a good time to celebrate either. Spend time with your family.

2. Read, read, read

For those book lovers, this is the time to pick your reading from where you left off. For those who don’t have a hard copy, e-books and kindle come to your rescue. Reading those mythological books and knowing about them would not be such a bad idea, considering we did not get them to read them in peace in the process of growing up.

3. What is your hobby?

Take up that hobby which you always wanted to but couldn’t because of your hectic schedule. It could be anything creative or artistic, like cooking, knitting, sewing, drawing, learning to play a musical instrument, etc.

4.Clean and clear

The spare time can make us overthink all the stuff happened in life and scroll through our phones for old chats and pictures. Clear the clutter inside your electronic devices and delete unnecessary media and documents.

5. Cleanliness is next to healthiness

Duh, cleanliness is important during this time. Clean your bed, room, cupboards, kitchen, every inch and corner, one by one. But yes, follow the hygiene tips too. (Wash your hands frequently, use a hand sanitizer, wear gloves, etc.)

6. Talk time

Make the most use of technology and call your friends and family and catch up on each other’s life.

7. Screen-free time

Ditch those screens for some time and spend time in the verandah or balcony. Indulge in board games like ludo, snakes and ladder, UNO, cards or carom.

8. Ticking off the Watch list

Watch the shows or movies which have been in your watch list for long and your 24/7 job didn’t spare time.

9. Take up the courses

There are so many available options for taking up online courses. This is the best time to take them up and enhance/upgrade your CV.

10. Keep the steps going

I am sure the bed calls you to laze around, but it is highly recommended that you stay active and exercise even being at home. Practiced yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises or a combination of them with Zumba, pilates, power yoga, etc. The best would be to create a playlist with dance numbers and just keep grooving. Also, keep strolling while watching TV, talking on the phone, surfing the web, etc.

Try to do your chores on your own like brooming, mopping, cooking, as there is no house help. Since there is no clock ticking, you don’t need to stress. Also, try to eat a healthy diet as this is crucial time and indulge less in binge-eating and junk.

11. Grooming time

I know you would feel like dressing up in comfy pajamas but at least comb your hair. Girls can try on different makeup techniques- doing those smoky eyes, learning nail art via tutorials, etc.

12. Online window shopping

We know you can’t do much online shopping, but you can at least do window online shopping and save items in our wish list right. It will save you time in the future.

13. Salon at home

Give yourself or each other a spa, massage, facial, manicure/pedicure at home. If that seems tedious, just go for DIY face packs/masks and follow the CTM regime diligently and prep your skin to glow when you will step out post quarantine.

14. Make that list

We all felt the world is coming to an end, isn’t it? (All thanks to those memes) Start creating a bucket and a to-do list and start putting in stuff you wish to do. Make a plan of things to do, places to visit once we will be free from this virus. Plan your work – as boring as it may sound, we all would agree that many important tasks are at a halt now. Write them down, so that you have a list in place which you can revisit later.

15. Sleep like a baby

While it will not be advisable to spend the entire day just dozing off, however, taking a nap won’t cause any harm. Complete your beauty sleep.  Because no office, no alarm clocks, hurray!!

Please understand that this is nature’s way of asking us to slow down. Give time to yourself, be kind to nature. We all have sulked about not having time to complete our sleep or do this or do that. Now is the perfect time to do those things which you wanted to but couldn’t.  Well, this is the golden period. Grab it now and make the most of it.
